Kathmandu: As of Saturday, 25 individuals have tested positive for cholera in various parts of Nepal, according to the Epidemiology and Infectious Disease Control Division of the Department of Health Services.
Dr. Yaduchandra Ghimire, Director at the Division, reported that 16 patients are from Lalitpur, one from Kathmandu, and eight from Kailali district.
The surge in cholera cases is attributed to unsafe drinking water, poor ecological hygiene, and compromised water and sanitation infrastructure due to flooding and landslides. The monsoon rains have likely exacerbated the spread of the disease through contaminated water sources.
Medical professionals are urging the public to maintain proper hygiene and ensure the consumption of clean drinking water. Symptoms of cholera include diarrhea, nausea, dehydration, yellow urine, low blood pressure, and sunken eyes. If not treated promptly, cholera can be fatal, with a mortality rate of up to 50 percent.
